Velingrad is known for its hot springs and Kleptuza lake – one of the largest karst springs in Bulgaria. Due to the prominence of mineral springs, it is christened as the spa capital of the Balkans. It has the second-highest mineral springs next only to Iceland. The mineral waters are used to treat a wide range of diseases and medical conditions. The Historical Museum of Batak chronicles the freedom struggle of the region.
