A UNESCO world heritage site, Tikal is a complex of ancient Mayan civilization ruins in the rainforests of Northern Guatemala. Step back in time and experience the Mayan life as it was some 1300 years ago. The highlight of this ancient city is that many of the edifices here are on a monumental scale rather than crumbling structures. Over 3000 structures have been discovered in a six-mile square area. At the heart of Tikal is the Grand Plaza, once the central square of the Mayan city. The plaza has two towering temples which can be climbed to have great views of the ruins and their surroundings. The incredible heritage site also sits on prime Guatemalan jungle and is a good place to spot wildlife. The easiest way to get to Tikal is from the nearby town of Flores and the best time to visit is from December to March.
