Sumba

Sumba Island is an offbeat tourist destination in eastern Indonesia. Divided into East and West Sumba, the island has a dry tropical climate. Visit the traditional Sumbanese houses in the villages surrounded by a stone-walled entrance. The houses are built on top of the hill to be closer to the spirits, Tall pointed roofs made of dried grass are a defining feature of the houses. Watch Ikat textiles being made in a traditional village by skilled artisans. Ikat is made from natural dye extracts and is famous all over the country. Visit the megalithic tombs - massive decorated tombstones of the deceased that dot the island. The Sumbanese believe in life after death and consider these tombstones as a sacred space. Trek to La Popu waterfall, one of the beautiful waterfalls that can be reached via a short jungle trek.
