Sanliurfa

Urfa is a quaint city in southeastern Turkey and is one of the country's great pilgrimage cities. The archaeological site of Gobeklitepe, on the city's outskirts, is the main draw for tourists. Excavations have revealed it to be one of the world's oldest religious temple sites. Situated on a hill slope, the ruins are a study in human history. The Golbasi or sacred fish pond in the heart of the city is a revered place. Legend has it that Prophet Abraham who was burnt at stake by King Nimrod was saved by God and he landed in this very spot with fire turning into water. Tourists feed the holy carp and offer their prayers here. The Archaeology and the mosaic museum have a wide range of exhibits from the Ottoman era to the Neolithic find from the Gobeklitepe site.
