Skoba Square is an important monument in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod. The magnificent square is adjacent to the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist near the Kremlin’s Ivanovo Tower. Known as the National Unity Square, the monument is a major turning point in Russia’s history and is a testimony of the Second People’s militia formed by Minin and Pozharsky. Skoba square serves as a reminder of the resolve of Russians to fight their invaders in medieval times. In the 17th century, city official Kuzma Minin called on the residents of the city to fight against the Polish - Lithuanian invaders. Prince Dmitry Pozharsky was chosen as the military head thus forming the Second People’s militia. The place where the people gathered was called Skoba Square. In 2005, the Russian Government renamed Skoba square as National Unity Square in commemoration of Russia’s National Unity Day.
